Sixth Form Bursary

The school has a sum of money available to award as individual bursaries to assist students in difficult financial circumstances for specific educational purposes. These maybe related to bus travel, university visits, book purchases, compulsory school trips, work experience, university open days, interviews or any other valid purpose necessary to your education at AGS.

Each half term students (and it must be the student, not the parent) may apply for a discretionary bursary for that particular purpose for that half term (even if the ‘event’ is in the future, but financial transaction is now eg a trip). This must be done according to the dates below.

Please submit any application on the correct form (click here for the form) and return either by post or email. Please give as much detail as possible in the box at the bottom of the form. It may be that a follow up email or phone call is necessary to clarify specific situations. You must give receipts for all items unless they re paid for via the school (eg a trip) without these we cannot process a claim. Please come to discuss any issues in the Sixth Form Office.

There are also bursaries available for specific vulnerable groups, namely if:

  • you're in or you recently left authority care
  • you get Income Support or Universal Credit because you're financially supporting yourself
  • you get Disability  Living Allowance (DLA) in your name and either Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit
  • you get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in your name and either ESA or Universal Credit

For a 'vulnerable group bursary' please email Mr Young (i.young@alcestergs.com) directly with the specific items/costs/receipts of what you wish to claim.

Bursaries are only awarded if students have 95% + attendance (excluding approved absence such as illness), 100% homework submission and satisfactory behaviour in and around school. Any bursary awarded is in the strictest confidence.

There is a finite sum of money available to award and therefore bursaries will be judged on the basis of individual need and with an equitable apportionment between students. If your total gross household income exceeds £25,000 pa you will not be eligible for a bursary payment unless three are circumstance that make financial threshold unfair e.g. the expense of multiple children in the household or some other significant financial outlay/anticipated reduction in income.  PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE SUM WE HAVE IS FINITE!
