Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education and Citizenship (PSHE)

As a part of your child’s education at AGS, we promote personal well-being and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme. PSHE is the curriculum subject that gives young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives and meet their full potential.

PSHE education is taught throughout the school in every year group and is monitored and reviewed regularly by the staff and governing body. Pupils in years 7-11 have one timetabled lesson of PSHE a week and they are taught in their tutor groups. Years 7-9 will be taught by one PSHE teacher throughout the year. In years 10 and 11 The PSHE schedule works on a rotational basis so each tutor group works through 5 or 6 topics in a year. These topics are taught by different teachers each with an area of specialisation.

All of the lessons connect to the three main themes within PSHE, namely Relationships and sex education (RSE), Living in the Wider World and Health and Wellbeing (see below).

RSE lessons are taught in an age-appropriate way and will include teaching about: Healthy relationships, including friendships and intimate relationships; families; growing and changing, including puberty; personal hygiene; changing feelings; becoming more independent; keeping safe and consent; developing self-esteem and confidence.

The resources used and content taught in PSHE lessons is informed by the PSHE Association as well as other expert charities and external speakers. PSHE lessons at AGS involve a mixture of engaging activities with a key focus on discussion to allow students meaningful opportunities to explore topics from different perspectives in a supportive learning environment. Lessons are regularly updated and amended to reflect changes to approved statutory guidance.
